How a Dream Became Our Reality
Our story didn’t start with a grand plan—it began with a question: “Is there more to life than this?” Like many families, the pandemic forced us to reevaluate everything. Before 2020, our days in Europe were comfortable but predictable. We had secure jobs, a cozy home, and three energetic kids. Yet, deep down, we craved adventure and a sense of freedom we hadn’t felt in years.
My fascination with Latin America began long before kids and careers—during my university days, when I spent two unforgettable years in Buenos Aires. That time left a mark: the warmth of the people, the rhythm of daily life, and a spirit of possibility I never forgot. Decades later, those old friendships and cultural connections opened doors I’d never imagined, making the idea of moving abroad feel less daunting.
Why We Chose Mexico
As Europe tightened its borders and daily life became a maze of restrictions, Mexico stood out for its openness. We noticed how Mexico’s approach to the pandemic was refreshingly relaxed, and it quickly became clear: if we were going to make a change, this was our window.
We dove into research, weighing up everything from cost of living to education and healthcare. Playa del Carmen kept popping up—beautiful beaches, a vibrant international community, and a pace of life that promised more family time. It sounded like the perfect fit.
Navigating the Residency Process—Ourselves
Applying for Mexican residency was intimidating, but we decided to tackle it ourselves—no lawyers, no helpers. My Spanish was good, but there were still plenty of hurdles: paperwork, appointments, and a crash course in Mexican bureaucracy. The process tested our patience, but it also gave us a real sense of accomplishment. By the time my residency was approved, I’d learned the ins and outs of the system—and was able to sponsor my spouse and children, making us all official residents.
Since then, I’ve helped dozens of other families navigate the same path, sharing what I’ve learned and making the process less overwhelming for others.
Why Every Family Needs a Plan B
If there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s this: having a “Plan B” isn’t just about escaping uncertainty—it’s about creating options. As parents, knowing we have residency in Mexico gives us peace of mind. We can travel freely, explore new opportunities, and adapt quickly if life throws us a curveball.
Having a second home base means our kids are growing up bilingual and culturally flexible. It’s broadened their horizons and ours and opened doors we never knew existed.
What Makes Mexico Ideal for Expat Families?
Family Life and Community
Mexico consistently ranks among the top countries for expat families, and it’s easy to see why. The culture is warm, welcoming, and family-oriented. Whether you’re in a bustling city or a laid-back beach town, you’ll find communities of expats and locals ready to help you settle in.
Education and Healthcare
While the public education system has room for improvement, there are excellent international and private schools throughout the country. Our kids are thriving in a bilingual environment, and the healthcare system—especially private clinics—offers high-quality care at a fraction of European prices.
Lifestyle Choices
Mexico offers something for everyone. We chose Playa del Carmen for its blend of modern amenities and natural beauty. Still, other families might prefer the cosmopolitan buzz of Mexico City, the charm of colonial towns, or the authenticity of rural villages. No matter your style, you’ll find a place that feels like home.
Cost of Living
Compared to most of Europe, the cost of living in Mexico is refreshingly affordable. From fresh markets to housing and childcare, our money goes further, giving us more freedom to travel, explore, and enjoy life together.
Considerations Before Making You Move
Safety: Mexico is a big country, and safety varies by region. We did our homework and connected with friends and local expats before choosing Playa del Carmen. Most areas are safe for families, but it pays to be informed.
Language: While many people speak English in tourist hotspots, Spanish is essential for daily life. Embracing the language has made our experience richer, and our kids are picking it up fast!
Immigration: The process can be complex, but it’s manageable with the proper guidance. Rules change, so staying up to date is key.
Why Mexico Works for Us—and Could Work for You

My wife, an artist, has found new inspiration for her art, which you can see here, and our children are growing up with a global mindset.
If you’re dreaming of a fresh start, more freedom, or simply a backup plan, Mexico might be your answer. We’ve been through the process ourselves, and now we’re here to help other families do the same.
